I have observed that marketing folks often don’t have a good grip on the technology, when they market technical products. However, I don’t think it would be beneficial to be placed in a marketing department, as a technical writer. Being close to and part of engineering or development makes access much easier. I would miss too much as communication is always the biggest challenge. I agree that any materials that marketing, training, sales, etc., create should be reviewed by the tech writer for the product to ensure consistency and accuracy, and of course, any materials the writer creates need to be reviewed by the same. I think it’s a matter of good leadership all ways around to foster communication and sharing among cross-functional teams, and not to put shackles on writers or content creators so that they can take initiative and get out and talk to a wide variety of people. I also think we should push for formal processes for such reviews. And, leadership on all sides should initiate regular product update meetings, if the iteration planning and stand-ups don’t suffice, which they often do not. Of course, in most environments, you can take the bull by the horns and go after what you need.
