We’re continuing getting to know the Rivalers behind the product. Today we talk to Vijay Chemburkar, one of our longest-tenured software engineers.<\/p>\n

First things first. Tell me about what you do here at Rival.<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019m Vijay, and I\u2019m a software developer. I\u2019ve been here for\u2026I think coming up on three years actually.<\/p>\n

What kind of things do you work on?<\/b><\/p>\n

We\u2019re not particularly siloed for the most part, so I work on back end, front end, UI. I\u2019ve been focusing on improving our search recently. And then I\u2019ve been working on some data mining to beef up our boosted post detection<\/a> feature, which has been fun.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re not at work, what do you find yourself doing?<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, I\u2019ve got two young children, so that\u2019s where all that time goes.<\/p>\n

What do you like to do as a family?<\/b><\/p>\n

My son is five and my daughter is three. We\u2019ve been somewhat stuck in the house because three-year-olds aren\u2019t very\u2026<\/p>\n

Mobile<\/b>?<\/p>\n

Yeah. No, they\u2019re not. But recently we\u2019ve gone on two hikes successfully the last two weekends. So, that\u2019s possibly a thing we\u2019re going to bring back in the mix. We\u2019re doing what we can to get out on the weekend. Like take a ferry, go on a hike, go to a children\u2019s museum.<\/p>\n

Tell me about what you did before you came to Rival IQ.<\/b><\/p>\n

Before Rival IQ, I was contracting in Oregon while my wife was finishing a Ph.D. program. Our son was one or two at that point. So, I was working part-time and watching him so she could finish up her dissertation and internship.<\/p>\n

Nice. What makes you excited to work here?<\/b><\/p>\n

The best part about working here is how easy and supportive it is for folks with families. Since two of the three founders have young children, it\u2019s just understood in the culture that you’ve got to the doctor\u2019s appointment, you’ve got to go to your kid\u2019s thing. And they\u2019re just like, \u201cYeah, of course. Go. And then you can get your work done when you get your work done.\u201d And it\u2019s just a base level of understanding, and there\u2019s no guilt. The company culture is that we\u2019re all adults, and we can get it done.<\/p>\n

When you are in charge of Wednesday lunch, what are you likely to either order or reserve for us to go out?<\/b><\/p>\n

The last few times I\u2019ve had to do it we\u2019ve had to go out. So, we often go to Von\u2019s<\/a>, which is like Rival IQ\u2019s unofficial cafeteria.<\/p>\n

Rivalers were challenged to the ultimate burger at Von’s: a sourdough bun with two 10-ounce patties, stacked with a grilled-cheese sandwich and topped with bacon, egg and cheddar, all the fixings and a secret sauce.<\/p><\/div>\n

Can you talk about how you use data in your day-to-day? <\/b><\/p>\n

As I mentioned, I\u2019m working on this boosted post<\/a> feature that looks at a bunch of posts to try to tell when somebody is actually putting money against it. Since social channels don\u2019t tell us when they\u2019re boosting a post, we\u2019re trying to figure it out for ourselves. And otherwise, the other thing I\u2019m working on is troubleshooting some performance issues we\u2019re having with our search function. It\u2019s not immediately obvious why we\u2019re having these issues, so we\u2019re trying to figure out the black box.<\/p>\n

Rival IQ’s machine learning can flag when a post likely has money behind it.<\/p><\/div>\n

Do you have a favorite Rival IQ feature? <\/b><\/p>\n

I like social posts<\/a>. That was the first big feature I worked on while I was here, and I feel like that\u2019s kind of become this core component where we use it to power all sorts of other stuff.<\/p>\n

Speaking of social posts and social media, how do you use social media?<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve started creating Instagram Stories, which has been nice because I can put pictures of my kids up which will autodestruct, so I don\u2019t have to worry about those being out in the world. But then my parents, and my wife\u2019s parents, and everyone can still see them.<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re really cute. I love your Instagram Stories. [Laughs] One final question: what do you want your legacy at Rival IQ to be?<\/b><\/p>\n
