Software brands found the most Twitter hashtag success with \u201cholidays\u201d like #worldemojiday, #pridemonth, and #piday.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title-methodology\">Methodology<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We used Rival IQ to analyze engagement rates, posting frequency, post types, and hashtags on the top three social channels for brands: <b>Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We define <b>engagement as measurable interaction on social media posts<\/b>, including likes, comments, favorites, retweets, shares, replies, and reactions. <b>Engagement rate is calculated based on all these interactions divided by total follower count<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We expanded our list this year to 14 top industries (industries with an * are new this year):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li><a href=\"#title-alcohol\">Alcohol<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-fashion\">Fashion<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-financial-services\">Financial Services*<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-food-beverage\">Food &amp; Beverage<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-health-beauty\">Health &amp; Beauty<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-higher-ed\">Higher Education<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-home-decor\">Home Decor<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-hotels-resorts\">Hotels &amp; Resorts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-influencers\">Influencers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-media\">Media<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-nonprofits\">Nonprofits<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-retail\">Retail<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-sports-teams\">Sports Teams<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#title-tech-software\">Tech &amp; Software*<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Within this report, we provide a representative sample of national and international companies in each industry by selecting <b>150 companies at random from each industry from our database of over 180,000 companies<\/b>. Why? <b>Because benchmarks are relative.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why can\u2019t you gauge success on likes alone? Because audience size is hugely important: 1,000 likes makes a huge difference to a brand with 2,000 followers, but is a drop in the bucket to a brand with 100,000 followers. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The metrics that matter<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To us, engagement rate per post is <i>the metric<\/i> because it controls for post volume and audience size, and because this metric is relied on across the marketing world as the one to beat. We made it to the end of another year of social media benchmarking. Here are a few high-level ideas to keep in mind as you plan your social strategy in 2020 and beyond:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instagram still reigns supreme.<\/strong>\u00a0While this channel\u2019s engagement dipped for the first time, its engagement rates are still exponentially higher than Facebook and Twitter. Pay attention to industries like Higher Ed and Sports Teams to see how it\u2019s done. To get ahead of this engagement decline, focus on carousels and tried-and-true engagement strategies like contests, and get your posting frequency up here. And don\u2019t forget about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/blog\/instagram-stories-benchmark-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram Stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steady engagement isn\u2019t bad.<\/strong>\u00a0In a world of algorithms and news cycles competing for attention, the fact that Facebook and Twitter were able to hold steady is a good thing. Strategic posting on these channels is key\u2013poor Media brings up the caboose year over year because their constant posting dilutes their staying power on social.<\/p>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re not posting video, it\u2019s time to start.<\/b> Video dominated on all three channels across almost all our industries, so it\u2019s time for brands to focus more on video.
