At that point in time, most people were still trying to figure out what the word \u201ctweet\u201d meant, and didn\u2019t know if they necessarily liked it. (And our social media policy said employees couldn\u2019t use social media at work!)<\/p>\n<p>Was I going to singlehandedly create and post to all accounts for the 300+ on-air talent and 13 television and radio stations?\u00a0Well, no. (Thank goodness!) But at the same time, where did my duties end and someone else\u2019s begin?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Five\u00a0Tips to Help Everyone Participate in Your Online Branding<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned a lot over\u00a0the last seven years since\u00a0my time at Fisher.\u00a0The biggest lesson being that your employees can be an incredible extension and amplification of your brand online &#8211; if managed well. \u00a0We spend so much time focused on the technology and data around our online activities, which is good, but\u00a0it\u2019s important not to forget the human factor of your brand.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my go-to tips for helping everyone in your company live your brand online &#8211; without putting your brand image\u00a0at risk.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Online Branding Tip #1: \u00a0Use Your Internal Experts as Teachers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2.png\" alt=\"Online Branding Training\" width=\"673\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2.png 673w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2-100x70.png 100w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-2-500x351.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For those of us who &#8220;live&#8221; digital marketing every day or work in the technology sector, it&#8217;s easy to forget not everyone understands all the nuances of the digital world or the many terms and analytics used in online marketing. Before you unleash the general employee population on social media, invest in training. And who better to do that than the employees who live this world every day!<\/p>\n<p>If possible, I recommend doing monthly or quarterly\u00a0training\u00a0sessions for the staff. Whether or not you make these mandatory is up to you (or\u00a0your boss), but make sure they\u00a0are\u00a0regularly scheduled and encouraged. Keep them short (usually 30 minutes is good) and highlight successes in your strategy, as well as social media changes or algorithm changes affecting your job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of seminars you can host:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explaining our social media policy<\/li>\n<li>Are we winning at social media?<\/li>\n<li>How does Facebook\u2019s algorithm work?<\/li>\n<li>How to get more Twitter followers<\/li>\n<li>How to craft a great social media post<\/li>\n<li>How to write great photo captions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even if the people attending the seminars aren\u2019t directly responsible for making social posts or writing articles, it&#8217;s still \u00a0helpful for them to\u00a0understand the company&#8217;s\u00a0goals in this area. And if you work in a company where employees have public personas online (media, executives, sports, startups, celebrities, etc.), you can help them manage their own personal brands\u00a0more effectively.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Online Branding Tip #2: \u00a0Make Your Social Media Policy More Human<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3.png\" alt=\"Online Branding Policies\" width=\"698\" height=\"847\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3.png 698w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3-247x300.png 247w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3-100x121.png 100w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-3-500x607.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve found many people are scared of official corporate\u00a0social media policies! They\u2019re often strongly worded and a bit frightening. While you may need your legal department to review your policy, it doesn&#8217;t need to sound &#8220;legalese&#8221;. \u00a0Make it easy to understand so\u00a0employees know\u00a0exactly what they CAN do just as much as what they CANNOT do.<\/p>\n<p>For example: If <a title=\"Russell Wilson Seahawks Facebook Profile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DangerRussWilson?ref=br_tf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russell Wilson<\/a>, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, didn\u2019t know he could and <em>should<\/em> contribute to social media, we wouldn\u2019t have this heartbreaking and inspiring Facebook video he shot on his phone of him with a child who needs a heart transplant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-4.png\" alt=\"Russell Wilson Great Online Branding\" width=\"433\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-4.png 433w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-4-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-4-100x125.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Online Branding Tip #3: \u00a0Get Everyone to Take More Pictures!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5.jpg\" alt=\"Online Branding Images\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5-100x63.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-5-500x313.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once people understand what you\u2019re working on and the goals for your blogs, social media and other online initiatives,\u00a0they can start helping and contributing.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first things I tell anyone I\u2019m working with on social media strategy is to take more pictures.\u00a0Social\u00a0sites like Instagram and Pinterest are photo-based, so images ARE the content.\u00a0Also, photos are now a standard with other social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and others.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a study from Forrester Research\u00a0validated\u00a0that pictures definitely speak louder than words on social media. Instagram showed a 4.21% brand engagement, Facebook had .07%, and Twitter was even less. Whenever you are at an interesting event or conference, stop and take three photos.<\/p>\n<p>If the person taking the photo is\u00a0not running your social media or blog accounts, they can always\u00a0immediately text or email the photos to the person that does manage those areas along with a quick description of the event.\u00a0This takes about two minutes and can\u00a0result in awesome, engaging social content!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6.png\" alt=\"Employees Sharing Images Online\" width=\"930\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6.png 930w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6-768x451.png 768w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6-100x59.png 100w, https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/brand-image-6-500x294.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have seen how excited people get\u00a0when they see their pictures posted on brand accounts. This stream of content will also give you the type of\u00a0engaging,\u00a0behind-the-scenes posts\u00a0you need.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Online Branding Tip #4: \u00a0Provide Ongoing Tips and Tricks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Beyond training and policies, provide fun and easy-to-implement tips for employees on social media. For example, once a week you could send out sample tweets and posts with approved images employees can use. If you make it easy for everyone to share, chances are you will extend your reach more quickly. Include a shortened link, and make sure the examples are made so everyone can just copy and paste them into their own profiles.<\/p>\n<p>There are even tools to help you do this. A great one is <a title=\"Everyone Social for Employee Social Media Management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.everyonesocial.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everyone Social<\/a> &#8211; an employee social advocacy tool.<\/p>\n<p>Also, make sure everyone knows the hashtags you are using and trying to &#8220;own&#8221; on social media, so they can use them, too.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Online Branding Tip #5: \u00a0Share Successes with All Employees<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Beyond training, make sure you are sharing successes and competitive wins with everyone at your company! If you don&#8217;t, no one will know that\u00a0picture from last week\u2019s launch party received\u00a0350 likes! It\u2019s really important to keep people in the loop if you want them to continue contributing.<\/p>\n<p>When you use great analytics tools, like Rival IQ, it\u2019s easy to show your staff or client how they\u2019re stacking up in the digital world.
