So it didn\u2019t take long to find answers\u2026<\/p>\n<h1>Drumroll please&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>I decided to compare these high-growth tech companies to the thousands of companies Rival IQ tracks\u00a0regularly. \u00a0Specifically, I looked at the quality of their meta descriptions and whether or not they were exposing their keywords to the world.<\/p>\n<h3>Top-Notch Meta Description? No better than the average bear.<\/h3>\n<p>Even though homepage meta descriptions play an important role in getting people to your website, Rival IQ determined that 56% of the companies in our database had left their meta\u00a0descriptions blank or had descriptions that were too long to be effective. So 55% of the tech companies rated a fail.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Score<\/span>: \u00a0TIE<\/p>\n<h3>Keyword Savvy? Not so much.<\/h3>\n<p>Even though the search engines no longer leverage meta keywords in their algorithms, quite a few companies, over 50% in our database, are still populating these fields on their website and 27% of those are optimizing their content. As a result, they\u2019re exposing their keyword strategy to the world. Only 35% of the GeekWire 200 is sharing their keywords with the world and fewer are actively optimizing them. Better, but that\u2019s still a lot of opportunity for market-watchers to gain valuable insight on how to compete against these market-leading tech companies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Score:<\/span> Point to the Tech Companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion?<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Technology DNA Doesn\u2019t Necessarily Raise Your Digital IQ<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>Running With The Social Media Big Dogs<\/h1>\n<p>Many of the GeekWire 200 leverage social media in their marketing mix. Analyzing their activity on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn gave me a great opportunity to explore the strategic insights available to marketers, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Channel choice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Market movers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Audience engagement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look. It\u2019s time to get off the porch and run with the big dogs!<\/p>\n<h3>Twitter Standing, Movement &amp; Engagement.<\/h3>\n<p>I always recommend having a baseline understanding of how your following on social media compares to others in your market. Assuming the companies have similar target audiences, Twitter could be a powerful channel to engage Runic\u2019s customers and prospects.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Who\u2019s Making a Play?<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Benchmarking alone doesn\u2019t provide insight on who\u2019s achieving success via a specific channel. That\u2019s 1,482 new followers. Movement worth watching and understanding.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Insight<\/span>: A deeper look reveals that RootMetrics has upped their tweet volume and the number of audience retweets has also increased significantly.<\/p>\n<p>As a marketer in the same industry, I\u2019d be looking closely the level of my Twitter volume and investigating the RootMetric\u2019s tweet topics that resonating enough to merit retweeting.<\/p>\n<h3>Insights from the Facebook Big Dogs.<\/h3>\n<p>Again beginning with the benchmark view, we discover that among the GeekWire 200, free online photo editor <a title=\"Free Online Photo Editing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.picmonkey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PicMonkey<\/a> is the biggest dog on Facebook. But there are several other big dogs nipping at their heels. If I were competing against DreamBox, I\u2019d be watching their growth in engagement via Likes and Talking About numbers to determine if Facebook is a channel I should leverage more.<\/p>\n<h3>Tableau Dominates LinkedIn.<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike Facebook, there\u2019s only one big dog in the GeekWire 200 when it comes leveraging LinkedIn. <a title=\"Award winning business intelligence software \" href=\"http:\/\/www.tableausoftware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tableau Software<\/a>, developers of data visualization products for business intelligence, dominates this channel.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_547\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-547\" class=\"size-full wp-image-547\" title=\"Tableau Dominates LinkedIn in the GeekWire 200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rivaliq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/linkedin-fol-tableau.png\" alt=\"Tableau Dominates LinkedIn in the GeekWire 200\" width=\"615\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tableau is the leader by far in the GeekWire 200 in LinkedIn followers<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><em>Domination requires dedication. <\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Tableau posted to LinkedIn twenty one times in March \u2013 approximately once every business day in the month. In March, they received 44 LinkedIn Likes. That number may not seem significant, but it turns out only 16 companies in GeekWire 200 received Update Likes in March.
